The honest part: NBA timings in India
We would rather set expectations properly than pretend this is convenient. The NBA is a difficult watch from India.
US Eastern time runs 9 hours 30 minutes behind IST during American daylight saving, and 10 hours 30 minutes behind for most of the season. Tip-offs are US evenings, so they land in the Indian dawn.

The practical consequence: West Coast games are the more watchable ones from India, landing between roughly 7:30 and 9:00 AM IST rather than at 4:30 AM. If you intend to follow basketball live, building around the later tip-offs is the difference between a sustainable habit and one that collapses by December.
Weekend afternoon games in the US are also worth knowing about — those fall in the Indian late evening and are the most convenient fixtures of the entire season.

The spread is the market that defines basketball. Because scores run to 100 points or more and blowouts are common, a straight winner market is often heavily one-sided. The handicap exists to make lopsided fixtures competitive as a betting proposition, and it is why basketball is quoted the way it is.
Why basketball behaves differently from cricket
- Scores are high and continuous, so totals markets are far more central than in cricket.
- Leads change constantly. A 15-point deficit is recoverable in a way a comparable cricket position often is not.

The NBA Cup
The Emirates NBA Cup runs from 30 October to 11 December 2026, its fourth edition. It is an in-season tournament played alongside the regular season: most group games count towards both the Cup and the regular-season record, with the knockout rounds following.
For a follower in India it is a useful entry point, because it gives the early months of a very long season a competitive structure that a straight 82-game grind does not.

The Macau preseason games are the standout for Indian time zones — China is only 2 hours 30 minutes ahead of IST, so those tip off at a genuinely reasonable hour. The Paris and Manchester fixtures are European evenings, landing late at night in India but far earlier than a US game.
Basketball in India
The domestic picture is developing, and it is worth being accurate rather than overselling it.
- The Basketball Federation of India (BFI) is the sport’s governing body.
- The India Basketball League, an official 5×5 and 3×3 national league, is set to launch in 2026.
- The Indian National Basketball League (INBL) was founded in 2021 under a five-year BFI licence.
- The National Basketball Championship is the BFI’s long-running national tournament.
- The NBA India Games in 2019 — Indiana Pacers against Sacramento Kings at the Dome SVP Stadium in Mumbai — remain the league’s only regular-season-standard fixtures played in the country.
Participation has grown substantially, particularly among younger players and in urban centres, and the NBA’s presence has driven much of the visibility. Domestic professional competition is still at an early stage compared with cricket or football, so coverage on any platform will be weighted heavily towards the NBA and European basketball.
